Points expiry that does not punish an annual customer

Expiry runs on a rolling twelve month clock from a customer's last activity, not a fixed clock from when each point was earned. Someone who buys once a year never loses a balance. It is configurable, and off by default.

The difference

Rolling clock versus fixed clock

Fixed clock

Points earned in January expire twelve months later regardless of what the customer does in between. A once-a-year buyer can still lose a balance if their next order lands slightly late.

Rolling clock (default when on)

The twelve months count from the most recent order, not the oldest point. Every purchase resets the clock, so a customer who buys at least once a year keeps their entire balance indefinitely.

Klaviyo

A win-back flow before points expire

Points Expiring Soon is one of six profile properties available in Klaviyo, so a segment built on it can trigger a flow that reaches a customer before their balance lapses instead of only informing them after. See thefull property reference and flow recipes.

FAQ

Points expiry, answered

Should WooCommerce loyalty points expire?

It depends on the store. Expiry pushes redemption and keeps a liability from growing indefinitely, but a fixed clock from the earn date punishes infrequent buyers who are otherwise loyal. kind loyalty defaults expiry off, and when it is on, the clock is rolling from last activity rather than fixed from the earn date.

What counts as activity that resets the expiry clock?

Any purchase resets the clock to twelve months from that order. A customer who buys once a year, every year, never has a balance old enough to expire.

Is points expiry on by default?

No. It is configurable and off by default, so nothing expires unless you deliberately turn it on and set a policy.

Does a customer get warned before points expire?

A Points Expiring Soon profile property is available in Klaviyo, so you can build a win-back flow that reaches a customer before the balance lapses rather than only notifying them after.
